What is the Night Owl Default Password?
As of 2026, the concept of a "factory default" password for Night Owl systems has largely been phased out in favor of mandatory security. If you are setting up a modern Night Owl recorder (like the Protect or Bluetooth series), you will be required to create a unique password during the first-time setup.
However, if you are working with an older legacy unit or have performed a factory reset, here are the common credentials to try.
1. Legacy Night Owl Default Credentials
If your system was manufactured before 2020, try these common factory combinations:

admin | 123456 | Used on many "HomeSafe" and "Night Owl X" units. |

2. Modern Systems (The "No Default" Rule)
For newer systems integrated with the Night Owl Protect or Night Owl Connect apps, there is no pre-set password.
The Startup Wizard: When the NVR/DVR powers on for the first time, it will automatically launch a wizard. You cannot bypass this screen until you create a custom password that usually requires at least 8 characters.
App Login: If you're using the mobile app, your password is the one you created when you registered your account.
3. Troubleshooting: Default Login Fails
If you've tried the common defaults and they failed, the system has already been initialized with a custom password. To regain access, follow these steps:
A. The "Forgot Password" Tool
On the login screen of your monitor, click "Forgot Password."
If Online: You can reset the password via the Night Owl Protect app on your phone.1
If Offline: The DVR will provide a Secure Code prompt.2 You will need to log into the Night Owl Reset Portal on a computer, provide your device's Serial Number/UID and the current date/time shown on the DVR screen, and it will generate a master unlock code for you.
B. Hardware Reset (Physical Button)
Most 2026 Night Owl recorders have a physical reset button.3
Locate the Button: Look for a small pinhole or a push-button on the back panel of the DVR/NVR.
The Hold: Press and hold the button for 15–30 seconds while the unit is powered ON.4
The Result: The system will reboot and prompt you to create a brand-new password.
