What is the Default Axis Camera Password? (Quick Setup Guide)
Setting up an Axis IP camera is a great choice for professional-grade security, but many users get stuck at the very first step: the login screen. If you are looking for the "factory default password," the answer has changed over the years as security standards have evolved.
Here is everything you need to know about default credentials for Axis devices in 2026.
The Short Answer: There Is No Default Password
On all modern Axis cameras (typically those running firmware 6.50 or higher), there is no pre-set default password. When you access a new or factory-reset camera for the first time, the system will force you to create a secure password for the admin account. This is a security feature designed to prevent hackers from accessing your cameras using "standard" credentials found online.
Default Login Credentials
While there isn't a default password, the username is almost always the same:
Default Username: root
Default Password: None (You must create one during the first login)
Default IP Address: 192.168.0.90 (If no DHCP server is available)
How to Access Your Camera for the First Time
Connect the Camera: Plug your camera into your network (PoE switch or injector).
Find the IP: Use the AXIS IP Utility or AXIS Device Manager (free tools from Axis) to locate the camera on your network.
Open the Web Interface: Type the camera's IP address into your web browser.
Create the Password: You will see a prompt to "Configure Root Password." Enter a strong password (at least 8 characters with numbers and symbols) and click "Create Login."
What About Older Axis Models?
If you are working with a very old legacy device (pre-2018), you might encounter these older default combinations:
Username: root
Password: pass
Alternative Password: admin or left blank.
Locked Out? How to Reset Your Password
If you have inherited a system and the previous owner didn't leave the password, your only option is a Hard Factory Reset. This will wipe the current password and allow you to set a new one.
Disconnect power from the camera.
Press and hold the Control Button (usually near the SD card slot or on the back of the camera).
Reconnect power while continuing to hold the button.
Hold for 15–30 seconds until the status LED indicator flashes amber/green.
Release the button and wait for the camera to reboot. You can now log in using root and set a new password.
