How to Troubleshoot NVR Network Port Not Lighting Up

You plug in a newly installed IP camera, walk back to your monitor, and realize the screen is black. You check the back of your Network Video Recorder (NVR) and find the worst-case scenario for physical troubleshooting: the RJ45 port LED lights are completely dark. No solid green link light, no flashing amber activity light—just dead silence.

1. What Do the Port Lights Actually Mean?

An Ethernet port on an NVR or PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch relies on built-in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to communicate its physical status. When these LEDs are dark, it tells a very specific story:


  • The Green LED (Link Light): This indicates that a successful physical connection has been established. If this is off, the NVR does not detect a physical device at the other end of the cable.

  • The Amber/Yellow LED (Activity Light): This flashes to show that data packets are actively traveling back and forth.

  • Both Dark: No physical connection is detected, and no power is flowing. The circuit is completely open.

The Most Common Causes for a Dark NVR Port:

  • Bad RJ45 Crimps: A copper conductor inside the modular plug isn't making physical contact with the gold pins inside the NVR port.

  • Water Intrusion: Moisture inside the camera's outdoor pigtail connector has shorted out the pins, causing the NVR to shut down power to that specific port to protect its internal circuitry.

  • Exceeded PoE Power Budget: If you plug too many power-heavy cameras (such as infrared PTZ dome cameras) into an NVR, the system will shut down ports because it has run out of total wattage.

  • Blown PoE Controller Board: A nearby lightning strike or power surge has fried the NVR's internal PoE chip.

2. The Step-by-Step Diagnostic Sequence

Before replacing an entire NVR, follow this logic-driven troubleshooting checklist to isolate the exact component that failed.


1.Perform the Short Patch Test:5 Minutes.

Take the offline camera down from its mounting bracket. Bring it right next to your NVR. Use a known, working 3-foot factory-made patch cable to plug the camera directly into the dark NVR port.

If the port lights immediately turn on, your NVR port and camera are perfectly fine—your long, structural cable run has a physical break or a bad RJ45 termination.

2.Test the Camera on a Known Working Port:5 Minutes.

Keep the camera connected locally. Plug it into an adjacent NVR port that is currently lighting up and working for another camera.

If the working port stays dark when you plug this camera in, the camera's internal network card or physical pigtail connector is dead. If the camera boots up on the new port, your original NVR port has likely suffered internal hardware damage.

3.Verify Your Total PoE Wattage Budget:10 Minutes.

NVRs have strict power delivery limits. For instance, a 16-channel NVR might have a maximum PoE power budget of 150 Watts.

If you have filled all ports with power-hungry cameras that draw 12-15 Watts each when their infrared night vision kicks in, the NVR will automatically disable ports to prevent an electrical overload. Check your NVR's internal system menu under Camera > PoE Power to verify how many watts are being pulled.

4.Inspect and Recrimp the RJ45 Connectors:10 Minutes.

If the short patch test proved your structured cabling run is at fault, inspect both ends of your Cat5e or Cat6 run. Look closely for bent pins, corroded copper, or a loose crimp.

Cut off the old modular plugs, strip the jacket back, and crimp on brand-new, high-quality RJ45 connectors using the standard T568B wiring scheme.
