To perform a factory reset on a Vivotek camera, you typically have two options: a hardware reset (using the physical button) or a software reset (via the web interface).
Since you are likely asking because the current password is unknown, the Hardware Reset is the most effective method.
1. Physical Hardware Reset (Most Common)
This method is used when you are locked out of the device.
Locate the Reset Button: On most Vivotek models, the button is a small, recessed pinhole. It is usually found:
Next to the SD card slot.
Inside the camera dome (you may need to remove the plastic cover).
On the cable pigtail (for some bullet models).
Power the Device: Ensure the camera is powered on (via PoE or a power adapter).
The "10-Second Rule": Use a paperclip or a small tool to press and hold the reset button for at least 10 seconds.
Watch the LEDs: The status LED will begin to blink or change color, indicating the reset process has started.
Wait for Reboot: Release the button and wait about 2 minutes. The camera will revert to its factory default IP address (usually 192.168.0.x or DHCP) and the password will be cleared.
2. Software Reset (Web Interface)
If you do have the password but want to wipe the configuration for a fresh start:
Log into the camera’s web interface.
Navigate to Configuration > System > Maintenance.
Locate the Factory Default section.
Choose between:
Keep Network Settings: Resets everything except the IP address.
Full Restore: Wipes everything back to out-of-the-box settings.
Click Restore.
3. Post-Reset Steps: How to Find the Camera
Once the camera is reset, it won't have its old IP address. To find it and set a new password:
Download Vivotek Shepherd: This is the official tool that scans your network for Vivotek devices.
Initial Login: * Username: root
Password: On newer firmware, it will prompt you to create a new password immediately. On very old legacy models, the password field is simply left blank.
Troubleshooting Tip
If holding the button for 10 seconds doesn't work, try the "Power-Cycle Reset":
Unplug the power/PoE cable.
Hold the reset button down.
Plug the power back in while still holding the button.
Continue holding for 15 seconds, then release.
Note: If you are managing multiple cameras for a client or a large-scale project, remember that a factory reset will also disconnect the camera from any NVR or VMS until you re-add it with the new credentials.
