If your Night Owl system is offline (not connected to your local internet router), you cannot use a mobile app or a cloud server to reset it. Fortunately, if your unit was manufactured after 2018, it has a built-in backup authentication system.

With your monitor and mouse connected directly to your recorder, go to the login screen. Intentionally type any random incorrect password five times in a row.

After the fifth failed attempt, a new Forgot Password link or button will magically appear at the bottom of the login dialogue box. Click it immediately.

The screen will display the security questions you configured when you first set up the NVR or DVR. Type your answers carefully, paying close attention to capital letters and spacing.

Once you click Confirm, the system will verify your identity, bypass the lock screen, and let you instantly write a new administrator password.

Method 2: The Night Owl Protect Portal (For Offline & Internet Recorders)

If you never configured security questions or simply cannot remember the answers, you can use Night Owl's cloud infrastructure to generate a temporary Secure Reset Code.

Look closely at the corner of your television or monitor screen. Write down the exact date and time currently displayed on your Night Owl live feed (even if the time is completely wrong).

Using a phone or computer, go to no-protect.com or passwordreset.nightowlsp.com. Log into your Night Owl Protect account.

Select your registered NVR/DVR panel and click Reset Code. The portal will ask you to input the exact time and date currently shown on your local monitor (from Step 1). Click Ok to generate your temporary master key.

Return to your physical recorder. Click Forgot Password on the login screen, enter this generated temporary code, and click OK to reset your system.

Method 3: The Master Recovery Key (For Legacy Systems)

For older, pre-2016 analog systems that do not connect to the modern Night Owl Protect app, the manufacturer hardcoded emergency "Master Passwords" into the firmware. If you are running an older system, look up your specific model suffix and try typing this master code into the password field:
