How to Reset Night Owl Password: Quick Steps for Forgotten Credentials

Locked out of your Night Owl DVR or NVR? In 2026, Night Owl has streamlined the recovery process through their "Night Owl Protect" ecosystem. Depending on whether your recorder is connected to the internet or is an older legacy model, here are the most effective ways to regain access.

Method 1: The Night Owl Protect App (Best for Modern Units)

If your recorder is connected to the internet and linked to your mobile account, this is the fastest way to reset your password.

  1. Open the App: On your smartphone, open the Night Owl Protect app.

  2. Request Reset: On the login page, tap "Forgot your password?"1


  3. Verify Identity: Enter your email or username. Night Owl will send a verification code via text or email.2


  4. Update Password: Enter the code in the app and create a new password.3


  5. Sync to Recorder: Once the app password is reset, your recorder (if connected to the same account) will typically update to match, allowing you to log in on the local monitor.

Method 2: The Reset Code Portal (For Non-Connected Units)

If your DVR/NVR is not currently online, you can use a web browser to generate a unique "Secure Code."

  1. Access the Portal: Go to www.no-protect.com on a computer or phone.

  2. Register/Log In: Log into your account and ensure your device is registered (you'll need the Model Number and Serial Number/UID).4


  3. Get Reset Code: Click on your device’s panel and select "Reset Code." 4. Enter System Date: You will be asked for the date currently displaying on your DVR’s Live View screen.5 This is critical—if the date is wrong, the code won't work.6

  4. Input on DVR: Go to your recorder’s monitor, click "Forgot Password," and enter the Secure Code provided by the portal.

Method 3: Hardware Reset (Physical Button)
