How to Reset Lorex Password: 3 Ways to Regain Access to Your System
Getting locked out of your Lorex NVR or DVR can feel like a major security breach, but the manufacturer has built-in several safety nets for this exact situation. Whether you are using the modern Lorex Home ecosystem or an older Lorex Cloud unit, here are the three definitive ways to reset your password and get back into your footage.
Method 1: Security Questions (The Fastest Way)
If you set up your recorder using the Startup Wizard, you likely configured security questions. This is the only method that doesn't require an internet connection or a smartphone.
Open the Login Screen: Right-click on your Live View screen and select Main Menu.
Select "Forgot Password": On the login prompt, look for the "Forgot Password" link at the bottom.
Answer Your Questions: Choose the Security Question option. You will be prompted with the three questions you chose during setup (e.g., "What was the name of your first pet?").
Create New Password: If answered correctly, the system will immediately invite you to create and confirm a new 8–32 character password.
Method 2: The Lorex Home App (Mobile Reset)
For systems manufactured after 2021 (the N841, N861, or D841 series), your smartphone is the key to unlocking the device.
Navigate to Password Recovery: On your NVR’s monitor, go to the login screen and click Forgot Password.
Select App Verification: Change the reset method to Account Verification via Lorex Home. A QR code will appear on your monitor.
Use Your Phone: * Open the Lorex Home app.
Tap Settings (three dots) > Device Password > Forgot Device Password.
Scan and Verify: Scan the QR code on your monitor with your phone. Lorex will send a 6-digit verification code to your registered email.
Enter Code on NVR: Type that code into your NVR monitor to unlock the "New Password" screen.
Method 3: The Physical Hardware Reset (Final Resort)
If you didn't set up an email or remember your questions, you’ll need to perform a "Hard Reset." This will return your system to factory settings, meaning you'll need to re-add your cameras and re-configure your recording schedules.
Power Down: Unplug the power cable from the back of the NVR/DVR.
Locate the Reset Button: * Exterior Pinhole: Many newer models have a small pinhole labeled "Reset" on the back or side panel.
Internal Switch: Some professional NVRs require you to unscrew the top cover. Inside, look for a small black button on the motherboard labeled "RESET" or "J1."
The Reset Procedure: * Press and hold the reset button with a paperclip or your finger.
While holding it, plug the power cable back in.
Continue holding for 15–30 seconds until you hear a long beep or see the Lorex logo.
Login with Defaults: The system will reboot into the Setup Wizard. You can now set a new admin password.
Comparison of Lorex Reset Methods
Method | Best For... | What You Need |
Security Questions | No Internet Access | Your Memory |
Lorex Home App | Modern NVR/DVRs | Smartphone & Email Access |
Hardware Reset | Older units / Total Lockout | Physical access to the device |
Don't Get Locked Out Again
Pattern Unlock: In your Account > User settings, enable a "Pattern Unlock." It is much harder to forget a visual shape than a complex alphanumeric string.
Email Verification: Always ensure the email address in your System > Maintenance menu is current.
Write it Down: Store your password in a secure password manager or inside your home's electrical panel (a common "pro" hiding spot for technicians).
