How to Reset Hikvision Password: Using SADP Tool and XML Files

Resetting a Hikvision password via the SADP (Search Active Device Protocol) tool is the industry-standard method when you have no recovery email or security questions. This process involves exporting a "request" file and importing an "encrypted" response file from Hikvision technical support.

Note: This process must be done in one sitting. Do not reboot your NVR or close the SADP tool once you have exported the file, or the reset will fail.

Step 1: Export the XML Request File

  1. Download SADP: If you haven't already, download the latest version of the SADP Tool from the Hikvision official website and install it on a PC.

  2. Connect to the Network: Ensure your computer is plugged into the same router or switch as your Hikvision NVR/Camera.

  3. Find the Device: Open SADP. It will automatically scan your network. Check the box next to the device you want to reset.

  4. Initiate Reset: Click "Forgot Password" in the bottom right corner of the software.

  5. Export the File: In the pop-up window, select the "Export" button. Choose a location on your computer (like your Desktop) to save the file. It will be named something like DeviceKey.xml.

Step 2: Send the File to Hikvision

You now need to send this file to a human technician who can generate a secure unlock key for you.

  1. Take a Photo: Take a clear photo of the label/sticker on the physical camera or NVR (which shows the Serial Number and Model).

  2. Email Support: Send an email to Hikvision Technical Support or your local distributor.

    • Subject: Password Reset Request - [Your Device Model]

    • Attachment: The DeviceKey.xml file you just exported + the photo of the device label.

  3. Wait for the Reply: Within a few hours (during business hours), you will receive an email back with a new file, usually named Encrypt.xml.

Step 3: Import the XML and Reset

  1. Import the File: Go back to the SADP tool (which should still be open). Under the "Step 2" section of the Forgot Password window, select "Import File."

  2. Select the File: Click the folder icon and select the Encrypt.xml file you received from support.

  3. Set New Password: Type in a new, strong password (at least 8 characters, including numbers and letters) and confirm it.

  4. Confirm: Click "Confirm." If successful, you will see a message saying "Reset Password Succeeded."

Why Did the Reset Fail?

If you get a "Reset Failed" error, check these three common issues:

  • The Power Cycle: If the NVR was turned off or rebooted between Step 1 and Step 3, the XML file becomes invalid. You must start over.

  • The Time Limit: The encrypted file provided by support is typically only valid for 24 to 48 hours.

  • Network Mismatch: Ensure your laptop is not on Wi-Fi while the NVR is on Ethernet. For the best results, both should be hardwired to the same switch.
