How to Reset Dahua Password: A Step-by-Step Guide for DVRs and NVRs
Getting locked out of your Dahua security system is stressful, but it doesn't mean your hardware is useless. Whether you have an older DVR or a modern 2026 AI-powered NVR, there are several reliable ways to regain access.
Here is the definitive guide to resetting your Dahua password using the most effective methods available today.
Method 1: The QR Code & Mobile App (Fastest)
This is the standard "Self-Service" method for modern Dahua systems. It requires that you previously linked an email address during the initial setup.
Open the Login Screen: On your NVR/DVR monitor, click the Forgot Password icon (looks like a lock or a question mark).
Scan the QR Code: A QR code will appear on the screen.
Use the DMSS App: Open the DMSS app (Dahua’s mobile app) on your smartphone.
Go to Me > Toolbox > Device Password Reset.
Check Your Email: Scan the QR code with your phone. Dahua’s cloud will instantly send a Security Code to the registered email address.
Enter the Code: Type that code into the NVR screen and click Next. You will be prompted to create a new password immediately.
Method 2: Security Questions
If you didn't set up an email but you did set up security questions, this is your best bet.
On the password reset screen, change the Reset Type to Security Question.
Answer the three questions you configured at setup (e.g., "What is your favorite fruit?").
If correct, the system will allow you to bypass the old password and set a new one.
Method 3: Hard Reset via Physical Button (Hardware Fix)
If you have no email access and don't know the security questions, you’ll need to open the device. Note: This may void your warranty if security seals are broken.
Power Down: Unplug the power cable from the back of the DVR/NVR.
Open the Case: Remove the screws on the top/sides of the metal enclosure.
Locate the Reset Button: Look at the motherboard. Modern Dahua units have a small black push-button labeled "RESET" or "J1."
Perform the Reset: * Press and hold the reset button.
While holding it, plug the power back in.
Continue holding the button for 30 seconds until you hear a long beep.
Re-Initialize: The unit will reboot to the factory "Startup Wizard," allowing you to set a brand-new admin password.
Method 4: The XML Export (Professional Support)
If your model doesn't have a reset button and you're locked out of the UI, you can use the Dahua ConfigTool on a PC.
Connect your PC to the same network as the NVR.
Open ConfigTool and go to the Password Reset section.
Select your NVR and click Reset.
Choose XML File and export the file to your desktop.
Email the File: Send this XML file to your local Dahua distributor or Dahua Technical Support (support_rpwd@dahuatech.com).
Import the Result: They will send back a "Result" file. Import that file into ConfigTool to unlock the device.
Dahua Reset Method Comparison
Method | Requirements | Success Rate |
QR Code / DMSS | Registered Email | 95% (Fastest) |
Security Questions | Knowing the answers | 100% (If known) |
Physical Button | Tool to open case | 90% (Hardware dependent) |
XML Export | PC & Tech Support | 100% (Takes 24-48 hours) |
Preventing Future Lockouts
Set a Pattern Lock: It's easier to remember a shape than a complex password.
Export Your Config: Once your system is set up, go to System > Maintain > Import/Export and save a config file on a thumb drive.
Update Recovery Email: Always ensure your recovery email is a permanent one you check regularly.
