How to install axis camera

Installing an Axis security camera requires a two-part process: physical mounting and network initialization. Because Axis devices run entirely on Power over Ethernet (PoE), you do not need to wire standard electrical outlets to the camera locations; a single network cable supplies both power and data.

The sequence below outlines the industry-standard setup process using official Axis utility tools.

The Installation Process

1.Mount the Hardware:Physical Installation.

Run a weather-rated, shielded Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable from your PoE network switch to the camera location. Secure the camera mount or backbox to the surface. Pull the cable through the waterproof rubber gasket inside the camera housing, punch down your RJ45 jack, and click it securely into the camera port. Mount the camera chassis onto the bracket.

2.Power On and Check Status:Hardware Initialization.

Connect the other end of the network cable into an active PoE or PoE+ network switch port. Look at the physical LED indicator on the camera body: a flashing green or amber light means it is booting up, while a steady green light indicates the camera is fully powered and actively searching for a network connection.

3.Locate the Camera on the Network:Software Configuration.

Download and launch the free AXIS IP Utility tool (or AXIS Device Manager for bulk installations) on a PC connected to the exact same local network subnet. The tool will automatically scan the environment, trace the hardware serial number, and discover the camera's temporary self-assigned IP address. Double-click the discovered device to open its direct web browser interface.

4.Set Master Credentials and Security:Firmware Initialization.

Upon opening the camera web portal for the first time, you will immediately be prompted to create a custom master password for the default "root" administrator account. Axis enforces strict security baselines, so the password must be strong. Set your local time zone parameters precisely, as mismatched timestamps can cause video management software to reject the feed.

5.Add to Video Management Software:System Integration.

Launch your recording suite, such as AXIS Camera Station Pro or a third-party platform like Milestone. Navigate to Configuration > Devices, click Search/Add, and the software will detect your newly named camera. Enter the "root" username and password you just created, allocate an available software channel license, and map the stream to your storage hard drives.

⚠️ Critical Weatherproofing Note: When installing Axis cameras outdoors, you must ensure the rubber cable gaskets are seated perfectly flush inside the housing ingress ports. If you pull network cable using pre-molded plastic boot covers on the RJ45 ends, snip the plastic boots off first; otherwise, they will deform the rubber gasket and allow moisture to seep along the wire jacket, permanently frying the internal circuit board.
