What to Do If Your Camera's Default IP Address Is Already in Use

You unbox a brand-new IP security camera, plug it into your network, and prepare to configure it. Instead of a clean setup, you are met with a lagging NVR, network dropouts, or an entirely missing camera feed.

When you configure a new surveillance system, there is a high likelihood you will run into this frustrating scenario: Your camera's default IP address is already in use by another device.

Security camera manufacturers ship their hardware with standard, pre-set static IP addresses. For example:

  • Hikvision defaults to 192.168.1.64

  • Dahua defaults to 192.168.1.108

  • Reolink defaults to 192.168.1.99

If you plug a new camera into your network and your router has already assigned that exact IP address to your smartphone, printer, or another camera, an IP address conflict (collision) occurs. The network gets confused, packets are dropped, and both devices will intermittently disconnect.  

At Cleveland Security Cameras, resolving IP conflicts on local networks is a daily routine for our field technicians. Here is our professional guide to safely reconfiguring your network without losing your camera feeds.

1. What Happens During an IP Conflict?

When two devices share an identity on a network, the router doesn't know where to send incoming data. This creates highly specific, frustrating symptoms:

  • The "Flashing" Live View: If two cameras share the same IP, your NVR monitor will violently switch back and forth between the two camera feeds every few seconds.

  • Intermittent "Device Offline" Errors: One device will work perfectly for a few minutes, then randomly disconnect when the other device wakes up and requests network packets.

  • Complete Local Network Slowdowns: Severe IP address collisions can flood your switches with bad Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) requests, causing your entire local network to grind to a halt.

2. The Isolation & Recovery Sequence

To fix a duplicate IP conflict, you must temporarily isolate the new camera, change its default IP address to a unique one, and then integrate it back into the main network. Follow our technicians' sequence to do this safely:  


1.Isolate the Conflicting Camera:5 Minutes.

Do not try to configure the camera while it is plugged into your main home or business network—the collision will block your commands.

Unplug the new camera from your main switch. Take it to a desk and plug it directly into the Ethernet port of a standalone computer or laptop using a PoE injector or a separate, isolated PoE switch.

2.Download the Manufacturer's Search Tool:5 Minutes.

To communicate with a camera that isn't on your active network subnet, you need the manufacturer's proprietary IP discovery software. Download the matching tool on your isolated computer:

  • For Hikvision: Download SADP Tool

  • For Dahua: Download ConfigTool

  • For Generic/ONVIF: Use a network scanner like Advanced IP Scanner

3.Temporarily Match Your Computer's Subnet:10 Minutes.

If your computer is on a different subnet (e.g., 192.168.1.x) and the camera is defaulted to a completely different layout (e.g., 192.168.254.x), they won't talk to each other.

Go to your computer's Network Connections, right-click your Ethernet adapter, select Properties, and double-click IPv4. Temporarily change your computer from "Obtain IP automatically" to a static IP in the camera's default range (e.g., 192.168.254.100).

4.Assign a Unique Static IP Address:5 Minutes.

Open the manufacturer search tool. The software should successfully find the camera on its default IP.

Select the camera and change its IP address to a unique IP address that is outside of your router's automatic DHCP pool. For instance, if your router automatically hands out IPs between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.150, manually assign the camera a static IP of 192.168.1.201.

5.Restore and Reconnect:5 Minutes.

Save the camera's new settings. Revert your computer's Ethernet adapter back to "Obtain IP automatically (DHCP)."

Unplug your camera from the isolated computer and plug it back into your main network switch. It will now boot up cleanly on its new, unique IP address without disrupting any other devices.


Pro-Tip on NVR Virtual Hosts: If you are using a Power over Ethernet (PoE) NVR with built-in network ports on the back, you can entirely bypass local network IP conflicts. Built-in NVR ports run on an isolated, internal network switch segment. Simply plugging your default cameras directly into the back of the NVR allows the recorder to automatically assign unique internal IPs to each camera port, keeping them hidden away from your main home or office Wi-Fi network.
